EMERGING

Acrylic Mixed Media on Canvas

36 x 24 in

I had a vision for this horse before I knew how to get there. I started with a wash of alizarin crimson, working out her pose and scale on the canvas - but the paint pulled me somewhere else. Layer by layer, I let myself play: color against color, palette knife moving wet into wet, watching the organic patterns that only happen when you stop trying to control the outcome.

When the underpainting was finished, I didn’t want to touch it. It wasn’t how I usually paint, and I loved it exactly as it was - cream, gold, slate, and shadow, with red bleeding through like something alive underneath. For two months, it lived in my dining room. I’d sit with it, turn the canvas, look at it from every angle, searching for the horse I’d originally seen in my mind, still waiting somewhere inside all that texture.

Eventually I committed. I began blocking out the storm to let her emerge - and every mark you see in the finished piece is original to that first abstract layer. Nothing beneath her has been repainted. She doesn’t stand in front of the background so much as rise out of it, still carrying the weather that made her.
