Set up my studio
We have a little studio outside our house, that originally was going to be my art studio. When it was first set up, there was a massive table that was not level in there, and it was turned the wrong way, and it felt tight in there because of the layout. So for a long time I took over the dining room table. The light was great, the big bay window overlooking the garden inspirational, the wax getting on the floor, the complaining from the family we want the dining room back...
The studio space had gone through some changes too. From unhappy art space to storage to a little guest room, back to semi storage..... I found an old table on craigslist that was perfect for the art studio. So, there was a big move around from dining room to art studio, and I am happy. Family is happy. It feels spacious, inviting and it works. Yay! So off to making encaustic medium and settling in. :)
It has been fun getting back into the studio and working with some new ideas. Recently I have been working with encaustics and mixed media, and finding some exciting effects. It has been fun watching the elements fuse together and have their own way of moving under the heat of the blow torch. The paintings truly start to have a life of their own during the process. Below are some of the recent works. I already have my panels primed and ready for another session. Finding myself dreaming of the paintings that are yet to be put onto panel. Excited.
Sold - Misty Run
Misty Run is made out of acrylic, pumice stone and encaustic. The horses are in pumice stone and acrylic applied with a pallet knife to the canvas. Encaustic medium is then applied over the painting to help create depth. Painting size is 8" x 24" x 2".
Sold - Into the Sunset
This lovely painting, is going to live in Vancouver BC. Into the Sunset is made out of oil encaustic (beeswax and oil pigments) Japanese rice papers and charcoal. The painting is 24" x 48" x 2" in size on a panel. Congratulations Else!
Earlier in December I attended the Dressage through the levels symposium, at Donida Farm as a vendor. We were able to set up our booths in the stalls. I have to say, my work really looks lovely against worn wooden panels. They fit so well and there was a great response to my work. Very fun! Thank you Donida Farms!
In the works...
A new painting is underway. The "five horses" is oil encaustic on a panel which is 24" x 48" 2" in size. At our barn there is a field of youngsters who come to the gate and get pushy about who is going to be pet. They are all under the age of three. Their playful gosling for attention always makes me laugh. The painting is from a sketch, seen below. Then put onto the panel. I'm trying not to get caught up in much detail, and let the painting to be playful and free.. we will see how I do with that intention.

Gabrielle England’s Releasing Energy Selected as 2014 HITS-on-the-Hudson Official Show Program Cover
SAUGERTIES, NY (May 20, 2014) — HITS, Inc. is pleased to announce Gabrielle England’s Releasing Energy has been chosen as the cover art for the 2014 HITS-on-the-Hudson Official Show Program.
England is an award-winning artist who is mostly self-taught, though did attend Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington. She specializes in creating abstract paintings of horses in oil encaustics, which is beeswax and oil pigment on panels. England’s studio is located at her home in Olympia, Washington, which is nestled amongst picturesque horse farms of the Pacific Northwest.
The image for the painting Releasing Energy, which will don the cover of the 2014 HITS-on-the-Hudson Official Show Program, was first seen in England’s mind.
“Most times I see the image for the painting in my mind’s eye, and then the fun begins as I try to recreate it in oil encaustics,” she said. “This panting was done layer by layer – I had to work backwards from top layer to bottom, dissecting the painting that I have seen so that I can recreate it.”
England also has a special affinity for line drawings. For Releasing Energy, she incorporated an abstract line drawing into the painting, embellishing it with gold, copper and bronze leaf. Then, the rich colors of beeswax helped create motion and energy from the horse. England says that the piece is one of her favorite paintings.
Horses have always been England‘s first love, and continue to feed her passion, life vision and creative connection. England is a dressage rider who currently owns two horses, Aston Marvin, an off-the-track Thoroughbred, and Jubilee, a six-year-old Morgan/Oldenburg. England’s 12-year-old daughter Amira is also a dressage rider and a member of the Baywood Pony Club.
More of England’s work can be viewed at www.gabrielleengland.com. England is happy to accept commissioned work.
The 2014 HITS-on-the-Hudson circuit boasts nine weeks of competition, welcoming riders of all levels, and offers the final qualifying opportunities for the popular HITS Championship in Saugerties, New York September 3-7, 2014 and the Marshall & Sterling Insurance League Finals, September 10-14.
